( CHARACTER INFORMATION )

Name/Work Name: Kcalb / Nero
Canon: The Grey Garden
Canon Point: After the good ending.
AU/CRAU: n/a
Age: Unknown, looks in his late twenties/early thirties, definitely older than their world (but just barely younger than Etihw, apparently).

History: 'Once upon a time, there was a certain world. It had two groups, who brought destruction unto each other. Why did they destroy? Why did they kill? The reason must have been lost to time, though, no doubt, the reason doesn't matter. Through long conflict, and destruction... their battle continued as if eternally.

At the end of the war... they made peace.

They chose to co-exist- together, they would establish peace. Some may think it was folly. Some, may think it was for the best. A long era of peace reigned. And so did pass a long, long... long period of time.'

The Gray Garden starts out in the Gray Village, a village where both Angels and Demons live together in harmony, due to the God and the Devil who created their world. The God, Etihw, and the Devil, Kcalb, were once at each others throats in a ruthless battle for dominance for reasons not clarified in game. Its safe to assume, given that angels and demons getting along with one another is "strange" in the different worlds heard of in The Gray Garden, that they simply may have been fighting due to their different races. Their battle finally ended with Etihw sealing Kcalb deep underground - and there he stayed, until he broke out and destroyed their world.

With only the two of them left, Kcalb readies a spell to steal Etihw's powers - only to hesitate. Though the reason isn't clearly given, the two start to work together - Eti implies later that the reason was due to something Kcalb's head angel brother, Wodahs, had said to get him to reconsider. They also tease Kcalb by saying he hesitated because he fell in love with them, much to Kcalb's embarrassment. Whatever the reason truly was, the two recreated the world and started over again - reincarnating their fallen generals in a world where angels and demons got along with one another. The two ruled over their new world in Blancblack Castle, watching peacefully together over their world and its inhabitants.

Of course, peace makes you lazy - especially Eti. The God didn't keep up the barrier protecting their world from outsiders, and of course, the Gray Garden was invaded. The game begins with a young demon named Yosafire stumbling upon a flaming bat and other denizens from another world seeking to take over their own. From there on the game focuses on Yosafire and her party's travels, while Eti and Kcalb operate behind the scenes. Their world is eventually fully taken over by a devil from another world, Ivlis, along with his minions. Eti is locked away in his world, while Kcalb is attacked by Ivlis with the intent of his powers being stolen. Before the final battle Reficul, a passing devil from another world entirely, helps Eti and some of Yosafire's friends escape from Ivlis' world.

Back in the Gray Garden, Ivlis gravely miscalculates Kcalb's strength - he steals his powers and leaves Ivlis weak enough for Yosafire and co. to defeat without problem. As Kcalb passes out from his wounds, Ivlis runs back to his own world with his minions and the Gray Garden is saved. While he sustains some bad wounds, Kcalb regenerates his arm and takes to walking with a cane so he can get around, and life returns back to normal again.

Personality: Kcalb is the head devil of his world, and as such he is shy, unsociable, and a really caring guy. If the truth is surprising that's because it is - devils and demons are supposed to be angel-hating and violence-loving, and Kcalb used to be just that. Before destroying the world and starting anew with Etihw, Kcalb was a destructive tyrant at war with God - Etihw and their angel generals.

Though still possessing his fierce strength, Kcalb only uses it for good - protecting his new world, and home. Despite being a man of few words, he cares much for the denizens of his world, and does his best to keep them safe. Frustrated with the lack of security surrounding their world, Kcalb stresses on more than one ocassion how much he wants to go back to their peaceful life. When Ivlis and his demons rain hell on the Gray Garden, Kcalb finally lets his vicious side show, but only to protect his world and get Etihw back. He expresses his utter confusion in bringing Ivlis' supposed anger, since they've never met, and he's never done anything to harm him - a good indicator towards how much he's changed as a person since the rebirth of their world.

Though he has become a rather sweet man, Kcalb refuses to see it - he secretly obsesses over how his powers are only to destroy, and even tells Yosafire she doesn't need to rescue him from falling off the edge of a cliff. Even though he's done nothing but protect their world, fighting with Ivlis reminds him of what he was, and still is capable of, and he resents that side of himself. A constant source of his past self comes in the form of his angel brother - Wodahs. During their war, Kcalb apparently was the one to harm Wodah's eye, and his brother wears an eye patch over it instead of regenerating it as a constant reminder of what he did. A constant reminder of what not to do again. Kcalb also chooses to sustain the wounds caused by Ivlis after their battle, though he regenerates his arm easily enough, he doesn't fully recover his body (and refuses Eti's healing), probably due to stubbornly wanting the memory of what happened to last. At the end of it all, though, Kcalb is not alone, best put into a quote between himself and Eti: "I... only destroy." "It's okay. I'll fix it." "... ...right."

While he used to be a tyrant, Kcalb is nothing but a shy and un-talkative 'old man' now. When he does speak you can bet there is going to be a mess of ellipses and brief one-word answers. A nine-period ellipses before a simple "right" is completely canon for him. Its also said by Eti that Kcalb never looks others in the eyes when he speaks to them, even Eti themself. He freaks out so badly when they force him to look in their eyes that he falls right onto his ground backwards from standing up. The only thing that can manage to wrestle him out of his stoic appearance is Eti's constant teasing. He gets embarrassed easily when its pointed out how much he truly cares, or Eti takes shots at his age (which is ridiculous because Eti is older!!).

He gets incredibly frazzled over public displays of affection, which Eti likes to drop on him nearly all the time, but he doesn't try to reject such advances. A good example of this is Eti threatening to give him a 'reward' and the two stare at each other for a good long while even after Kcalb puts up the meager pretense of rejecting their affections. Though he's best at receiving it, he can sometimes dish it out as well, likening Eti to his inept cat familiars. When he expresses his frustrations in their inabilities to get anything done, Eti calls them lose canons - to which Kcalb responds "you can say that again".

He has a bit of a childish side, as shown at the end of the game where he repeats himself over and over about not wanting to go to a devil's-only dinner party. He dreads having to talk to much, and also having to hang around close-minded devils. This is also incredibly obvious when he rejects his love of sweets, despite being gifted an entire apple pie. He's also been known to sneak cookies in the dead of night. In an extra scene after beating the game he full-on brings up being stuck underground for eons being 'unhealthy' over a meal of hotpot because he was scolded by Eti for only eating meat instead of healthy vegetables ("It was DARK and COLD..."). While Eti is the best at reading his silence, Kcalb is able to speak for himself as well. Wading through the shyness, he still has a big heart deep down. He asks Wodahs to do reconnaissance work for him, but still expresses his unease, and tells him to be careful. He's also fully capable on ragging on Eti's laziness at all hours of the day as well, though he never pushes them into doing anything.

Kcalb trusts Eti completely, no matter their decisions, and their bond together is one of the main things that helps Kcalb grow as a person. When Ivlis grabs Eti and takes them away Kcalb can feel something is wrong almost immediately - but he trusts Eti, and has confidence in their strength, not doubting them for a moment. When they don't return quickly he just assumes they got lost on the way home, and that they're completely fine. Deep down he loves Eti, and the feeling is mutual (and obvious to literally everyone in the game), the two of them believe in, and trust one another completely, something that lets the two of them rule over their strange world where angels and demons can get along happily.

Debt: To bring Etihw back to their world, since they came here willingly as penance for being lazy.

Suitability: 'Willingly' coming here to bring Etihw back, Kcalb isn't very up set about being forced to work. Mildly irritated and frustrated, sure, but he wants to bring Eti back more than anything. He'll struggle with having to be social, and getting used to new technologies and crowds and such, but he'll be relatively okay with the change.

Previous Game Info: n/a

Inventory: Just a cane to help him walk.

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Kcalb possesses the highest HP in the game at the level cap of 50 - making him even stronger than Etihw. He also possesses the ability to steal the powers of others, and its been said that Ivlis stealing Kcalb's powers would make him stronger than Reficul and Eti both (Ivlis' strength beforehand doesn't even come close to challenging either of them). So he's pretty dang strong. All of Kcalb's powers stem from destruction - he destroyed an entire world, after all! He expresses frustration in only having one type of power at least a couple of times in-game. His powers are unfortunately left pretty vague in-game, as we only see him fight once against Ivlis, where he just steals his powers and weakens him in a flash.

Crippling social anxiety and shyness are one of Kcalb's main weaknesses, as well as not putting much concern toward his own well-being. He allows his entire arm to be blown off before he decides to wipe the floor with Ivlis. More often than not he finds himself struggling in engaging with others or expressing his true thoughts, and makes things harder on himself because of it.
